Kownayn University was founded in 2013 by a group of dedicated Somali youth in the diaspora who shared a common vision: to give back to their homeland through education. Having experienced the challenges and opportunities of living abroad, these founders were driven by a strong sense of responsibility to contribute to rebuilding Somalia’s intellectual and institutional capacity.

Their initiative was rooted in the belief that sustainable national development depends on access to quality higher education. As such, the establishment of Kownayn University was not merely an academic venture but a strategic intervention aimed at empowering Somali youth through knowledge, skills, and innovation.

To this day, the founding members continue to provide both strategic guidance and financial support, ensuring the university’s stability and long-term growth.

Following its establishment, Kownayn University embarked on a steady path of institutional development. The university focused on building academic structures, recruiting qualified staff, and designing programs aligned with national and global educational standards.
